Da Mao’s behavior as a real celebrity may relate to his heritage. Da Mao was born in a family of celebrities and is a child of stars. His mother “Fu Wa” (SB No. 570) was one of the mascots of Beijing Olympics Games in 2008, and his father, “Xiong Bang” (SB No. 540) was a celebrity at Japan’s Adventure World. Thus, “Da Mao” has had a star’s upbringing and a very outstanding personality since his birth in 2008.

One aspect of a star’s temperament is that of a loner. In this way, Da Mao behaves like “the Lone Ranger”; as a youngster, he did not often play with his companions. When he was by himself, Da Mao usually lowered his head and ignored other giant pandas. When eating, other giant pandas pushed their way by shoving or bumping and eating together. However, Da Mao went to a corner slowly, sat down and enjoyed his food alone. Nonetheless, Da Mao is not a selfish panda. When his companions stole his food after eating up their own food, he never seemed to mind and willingly gave it away.

These days Da Mao attracts numerous visitors and panda fans to Canada’s Toronto Zoo with his unique manners. More people have joined together to protect rare endangered wildlife. This is one of the achievements of the breeding, environment and conservation cooperation project between Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Foundation, Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding and the Toronto Zoo.
