Ten Years--A Paean for Giant Panda Jingjing
Date: 2015-09-02

On August 30, 2005, a princess panda was born at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. She bore the hopes of many people and became the favorite of that year. Such a weak baby could never think of how popular she would become. On November 11 of the same year, the names of the mascots for Beijing Olympic Games were determined, and she was named as Jingjing which is the same as one of the Olympic mascot names. It is actually from that time I began to pay attention to and get to know giant pandas.

Jingjing was born on August 30, 2005

In 2006, when I was visiting the legendary Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, Jingjing was the first panda I saw. She was climbing up and down around the railings in the solar delivery glass room, which scared me so much that I rushed for her keeper, “Jingjing is hanging on the railing and cannot climb down!”

The keeper came. After taking a look at Jingjing, the keeper smiled at me and said “No worries, she can climb down easily, she has that ability, just let her stay there! She likes playing like that. Thank you for your concern!”

One-year-old Jingjing was a naughty girl.

After hearing that, I was relieved and smiled back at the keeper sheepishly for my ignorance. I put my hand on the glass and to my surprise, Jingjing hung upside down on the railings and stretched her hand towards the glass, and in this way we had a palm-to-palm intimate touch with the glass in between.

The one-year-old Jingjing is a naughty fairy walking into my heart in that way. Even to this day, I still think that the one-year-old panda should be as cute as Jingjing.

In 2007, Jingjing was adopted by a Norwegian fan; in 2008, the first book about Jingjing--Watch Me Grow: Giant Panda was published.

On October 12, 2007, Jingjing was adopted permanently by Mr. Stein Frode Ertzeid—a panda fan from Norway.

On July 16, 2008, the world's first release ceremony for Watch Me Grow: Giant Panda (Chinese version) was held at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.

Time flies. Jingjing has begun playing hide-and-seek. People’s attention has increasingly been drawn to other new born pandas, and Jingjing gradually faded out of sight of most people.

On August 2, 2015, after hearing the news that Jingjing gave birth to two cute cubs, I was filled with joy. Seeing Jingjing expertly hold her babies in her arm in the video, I couldn’t help praising her in my mind and I’m sure she must be an excellent mother.

It just happens to be ten years from 2005 to 2015. During these ten years, as an Olympic baby, you (Jingjing) gave birth to another twin babies of Olympic Games on the day when our country won the bid for Winter Olympic Games, which is indeed gratifying. Jingjing, best wishes to you! These two new born babies are a paean for you for the past ten years. We love you, Jingjing!

May you and your babies enjoy continued good health!
